My students need 24 subscriptions to Junior Scholastic to help bring the world around them alive.
In an ever changing world full of challenges and promise, students need exposure and knowledge of the world outside their little bubble. Students nowadays seem content with their close circle of friends and family and don't bother thinking beyond that. Junior Scholastic exposes them to the world!
My students are amazing!
They come from varied backgrounds with individual characteristics that make my job both trying at times and rewarding on a daily basis. I teach at a school with a high ESOL population and almost 70% of our demographic are on free and reduced price lunch. Life experience and exposure to enriching life events is lacking for most of my students. My kids are eager to learn and devour whatever resources I find for them. I know the high interest stories from Junior Scholastic would benefit and enrich their lives.
This project will provide my students with a window into the outside world. Junior Scholastic magazine will expose them to stories that have an impact on their lives. It will arm them with knowledge that will help prepare them for life outside of Middle School. I plan on using the debate topics in each addition to help strengthen my students' verbal skills as well as their critical thinking skills. Students will learn the importance of looking at both sides of an issue and thinking critically about both (something our politicians should have been taught in Middle School). The skill builders that accompany this publication will expose my students to informational text which should allow them to preform better on FCAT 2.0.
Donors who help fund this project will be impacting one third of my school.
I plan to share this publication with the other teachers in my grade level. By ordering just one class set and sharing with the other teachers, I will help impact a huge portion of my school. Supplemental materials are hard to come by and there are no additional monies for anything anymore. You would not only provide me with an awesome publication to share with my kids, you would also be opening their eyes to the world!Read More
