Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The world is in the palm of your hands! This is what I tell my students. Yet, for many of my students the world is simply their neighborhood, their school, and their community. What is outside of their world is difficult to see, grasp and understand. My goal is to change that and I need your help!

Presently, I teach third grade to students in a high-needs community.

Many of my students are English language learners and work hard to improve their skills in English. In addition, they come from homes within a low-socioeconomic neighborhood. Despite their challenges, they are motivated and eager to learn. Currently, my students have difficulty understanding a world outside of their community. This is mainly because my students are unable to have many cultural/educational experiences that other children are able to have. I want to change this by bringing in the Weekly Reader magazine so that students may begin to learn about other countries, communities and way of life.

My Project

The importance of current events has dwindled over the years and we are seeing less and less emphasis on a world other than what we know.By using the Weekly Reader on a daily basis, students will be honing in on critical thinking skills through the many articles pertaining to science, social studies, health and mathematics. I want my students to recognize that the world is large, beautiful, inspiring, and amazing. Through the reading of one article per day, students can feel confident in their increased understanding of different countries, aspects of nature and the manner in which to accurately read maps and graphs. This continuous routine will allow students to not only enjoy learning about the current events in today's world but it will enable them to practice and master skills necessary for their state exam.

This project is important to me because I think that students need to be aware of all of that our world has to offer; important people, new inventions, aspects of nature, etc.

Through the incorporation of this magazine, I am certain that my students will become more knowledgable in areas that they once felt threatened by or uncertain in. Their enjoyment in reading daily articles will enable them to feel more confident in their learning and overall understanding.
