I teach English language development to an amazing group of refugee and immigrant students. Many of them had severely interrupted schooling before they got here, so they are not only learning English and all of their school subjects in English, but they are also learning all other academic skills and subjects.
My students are eager to learn and deeply appreciative of the opportunities they have here at our school.
My goal is to provide them with every opportunity and resource that they need to be successful in their new home.
My Project
My ELD students want to be knowledgeable about what is happening in the news and world around them, but language barriers can make reading the news hard.
Scholastic magazines are a high interest non fiction subscription that students always seem to be engaged in.
For my level 3 students, there is Scholastic Action, which has a mix of true teens stories that highlight current events through the experiences of teens like them, historical articles that they can relate to present day situations, and my personal favorite: short plays for students to practice reading and speaking skills by acting out. Scholastic Upfront is for my advanced language learners, and the articles come from the NY Times, but are made to be at a more comprehensible reading level.
I use articles from these magazines as openers to units to get students interested, as part of project-based learning when students research issues, as a way to ignite passion for debate or other public speaking, and always to build nonfiction reading and writing skills. This subscription will bring me up-to-date articles throughout the year as well as online access to supplementary materials, such as videos and comprehension checks.
