Current Events for Expanding Minds

Help me give my students Scholastic Magazines, Plays, and an organizer to store them to take them beyond the walls of our classroom as we study and read about different news events, communities, and cultures.

My Students

I teach 3rd grade in an economically disadvantaged area in Western Pennsylvania. My students come from diverse backgrounds and varied life experiences. All of the students in my district receive free lunches due to the fact that 85% or more of the students are classified poverty stricken. My classroom is a place where my students feel loved, encouraged, and challenged. Many times, the children aren't given encouragement, and support at home, so I provide that in my classroom. My students also often don't have the necessary tools to make them successful in school. They are eager to learn and take in everything that is presented to them. They especially like hands-on activities and real world experiences due to the fact that many of them haven't personally had these experiences. My students are extremely appreciative of anything and everything that is given to them to help them become more successful.

"You have brains in your head, You have feet in your shoes, You can steer yourself any direction you choose." ~Dr. Seuss.

My Project

Reading newspapers and magazines seems to have become a lost art, yet my students love discussing current events in the classroom. Scholastic Magazines are the perfect way to bring back that lost art of reading these print publications. My students also love acting out plays and learning their parts. The set of 3 plays will not only catch their interest, but will also help to improve their reading fluency. The organizer will help to keep the publications sorted and readily available for use.

Studies have long pointed to the benefits of current events programs for shaping a nation of lifelong newsreaders.

Using the news can go a long way toward developing an informed citizenry too. I know my students will love reading these publications and will get the mindset of "reading is fun". They will be so excited to get their parts for the plays and "create their character".

The possibilities are endless with these materials in my classroom. Not only will my students be engaged in the learning process, they will be able to practice skills that we are learning as well. I can focus lessons on vocabulary, main idea, author's purpose, compare and contrast, sequencing, comprehension, and so much more. I know that these materials will be a well loved, beneficial addition to my classroom.
