Current Event Articles to Promote Civic Engagement
My students need access to a current event magazine written specifically for high school students. The articles in UpFront magazine are of high interest to high school students and help them see the importance of civics.
Our high school is a public school located in rural Lake Arrowhead, California. Our students are enthusiastic about learning and life in general. The students encourage each other from subscribing to the valedictorian's podcast to crowning a beloved special needs student Homecoming King. They love to participate in lively debates and activities. These students are kind, compassionate and make my job a joy! Many students in the school have limited access to news and current event articles--please help them out!
My Project
I have seen first hand the impact UpFront magazine has on classroom discussion in my government class. Unfortunately this will be the first year in my teaching career that our school will not have the funding to pay for the subscription. UpFront magazine is a publication especially for high school students. Many students believe that civics is a subject that does not affect them, but when they see that these high interest articles are directly related to our government, they become hooked on civics. UpFront presents both sides of current event issues and is written at a high school appropriate reading level. These articles give non-biased background material that leads to engaging classroom debate and discussion.
