Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a third-year teacher who teaches in an urban school system. Our school system is defined by its rich diversity and openness to all, where all students feel welcomed and accepted. However, as an urban school district, we face additional challenges. Almost half (47.7 percent compared with 26.3 percent for the state) of students are economically disadvantaged. Students in our community often hear of instances of gang violence and drug-related crimes; some even, sadly, lose their lives.
While these obstacles exist, the true beauty of our school system is that it is extremely diverse and multicultural.
Our community proudly serves as a gateway to education for immigrant children. As a result, almost a quarter of students (24.1 percent compared with 8.5 percent for the state) are English language learners (ELLs) and for four out of five students (80.1 percent compared with 18.5 percent for the state), English is not their first language.
While these challenges are real, my students are eager to learn and prepare for their futures. They recognize the obstacles that come with learning in an urban school system, and still, they are determined to succeed and rise above what is commonly expected of them.
My Project
Over my past two years of teaching, I have been developing a "Reading Corner" for my students. Our reading corner consists of various donated books, some comfy seating, and warm lighting. It was SUCH a hit this past year, and something I am hoping to continue. With how popular the Reading Corner was this past year, our furniture has some clear wear and tear damage. Beans are falling out of beanbags left and right.
Promoting a love for reading in my classroom is very important to me, and, believe it or not, comfy seating goes a long way!
By having nontraditional seating available in the reading corner, my students will be more likely to curl up with a great book. They will be able to see reading as something they can do for enjoyment and pleasure, and not just something that they only "have to do" in school. The bookmarks included in this project will help my students keep their places in their books.
