My Students

I teach at a very diverse Title 1 school in North Alabama. We have a very high percentage of students receiving free/reduced lunch, as well as many minority students. Many of my students do not have access to quality literature at home.

My students are excited to learn and love coming into our warm and inviting school where we strive to make a difference in each child's life.

My goal is for my students to discover new people, places, and cultures through literature.

My Project

In order to develop a love of reading, students need an opportunity to read engaging texts, and EVERY student needs to be able to touch the book being read. By having a classroom set of Mr. Popper's Penguins and No Talking, my students will be able to personally experience these novels by engaging with the text one-on-one.

The benefit of using novels to teach reading is five-fold.

First, it builds background and world knowledge. Second, it builds an authentic vocabulary. Third, it enhances communication and dialogue skills. Fourth, it helps to develop social skills. Finally, it engages the student and creates an excitement for learning.
