Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a third-grade teacher at P.S. 345, a shortage school in Brooklyn. Approximately ninety-eight percent of our students receive free lunch. The majority of the students in our school test at below grade level.
At the present time, about 40% of my students have a learning disability. They are sweet children who, despite their disabilities, want to learn. Their goal, and mine, is to reach their full potential and test sucessfully at their grade level. My proposal is for funding to purchase books that will help them achieve this goal.
My students particularly enjoy reading nonfiction literature and expanding their horizons through reading. Unfortunately, they do not have books to read at home and are not always able to go to the public library. It is particularly difficult for them when I assign research projects, which I do throughout the year, because my classroom library is limited and most of the books are shared among the grade.
I would love to have books in the classroom, which are appropriate to their reading level, that my students could use to do research on a variety of interesting topics. In particular, I know they would enjoy having science books about landforms, the solar system, etc.
Lakeshore Learning has a number of sets of nonfiction books that I think would be great for my students, and I am asking for funding to purchase these sets. These books are appropriate to their reading level and cover a diverse and fascinating range of interesting subjects. The book are designed to appeal to young readers. They are heavily illustrated with beautiful pictures.
My students will be taking the mandatory standardized tests and hoping to do well. Having these books as part of our classroom learning experience would really help them succeed, and it would surely boost their interest in reading generally.
Thank you for considering my proposal!
