Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come from a heterogeneous background. They are part of a dual language school community where they learn their academics in English and Portuguese on a daily basis. As a bilingual teacher, I need to provide them with the best support for them to accomplish their hopes and goals for 3rd grade.
The mission of our school is to integrate the diverse languages and cultures of the communities it serves by teaching all students in two languages-in Spanish and English or in Portuguese and English-and helping children develop an appreciation of other cultures.
My students are also inquirers, curious, and knowledgeable learners who are engaged in fun and creative activities throughout the school day. We are also an International Baccalaureate school that has the goal to "develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect". For all the reasons above, I believe we will benefit from using materials that will support our creativity in expressing ourselves through different types of writing. Your donation will benefit my students to be risk-takers and open-minded about their own culture, identity, and heritage by writing their own stories.
My Project
These materials will continue to enhance the print-rich classroom that I strive to create. My classroom is a place where my students are encouraged to be risk-takers and curious about the world around them. Through the teaching of inquiry, we will embark on a new journey to discover that "Culture, beliefs, values, and relationships shape an individual’s identity". We will learn how to express ourselves through the process of writing about our own identity and finding out more about our heritage.
My students will be very excited to embark on this journey by writing their own questions, memories, small moments, poems, narratives, and letters to families using these materials as support.
All of these materials have been chosen with their uniqueness in mind. They will be able to be more independent and engaged during inquiry/writing time, which will help them continue to develop their writing skills as 3rd graders.
With these new materials, my students will also be able to have a variety of choices that will allow them to write independently and to express their ideas in different ways. The best way to increase writing skills is to write more, and these materials will continue to help my students grow stronger in literacy. My students already have shown an astonishing interest in writing, and this project will only help enrich their experiences with the printed word and to share their ideas with the rest of the world.
