My students need motivation to change their future. Coding different robots such as Ollie Robot, BB-8, and SPRK Robot, will get my students motivated to learn computer science!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come from a high poverty level - 100% of the students receive free breakfast and lunch. They have a difficult time visualizing their future out of poverty; however, they all love gaming. I'd like to cultivate the curiosity of coding and help them control a robot and their future!
My students love to come to school where their day is structured and consistent.
Many of the students go home where there is not a lot of structure or support for homework and the poverty cycle continues. Students keep themselves busy by plugging in to electronic devices. These kids USE their electronic devices for hours on end; what if I could show them a future where they CODE these devices? It could change their lives forever! According to Computer Science Education Week "There will be 1 million more computer jobs than (computer) students over the next 10 years."
My Project
As the school's computer teacher, I teach over 500 students in kindergarten through sixth grade. I feel responsible for getting the students ready for their future - a future that doesn't yet exist. I get my students involved the on-line www.Code.org national coding program. Now I'd like to take the computer coding off the screen and on the floor with robotic coding. My students would use the free coding app on our classroom iPads to write code to control the SPHERO, Ollie and BB-8 Robots. We will build courses for the robots to maneuver and compare the different abilities of the different robots. We will test the code written on one robot on the others to see how differently they react to the same code program.
My project will make a difference in my students lives - instead of simply using everyday technologies, my students will have an appreciation for how it was developed and may just begin developing a way to improve it.
I want my students to visualize a better future for themselves.
