My students need two Chromebooks, two pairs of headphones, and a surge protector to help facilitate the completion of our Curiosity Projects and become lifelong learners.
Anatole France said, "The whole art of teaching is only the art of awakening the natural curiosity of young minds for the purpose of satisfying it afterward."
I want to ignite a passion for learning in my students and help them to be curious about the world they live in.
My students are a bright group who are losing their enthusiasm for learning.
They all have unique backgrounds, learning styles, needs, and, most importantly, interests. Our curriculum has become more and more narrow through the years, with little opportunity for individualizing instruction to encourage each child to seek out topics of interest. They are becoming more complacent learners and don't have as many opportunities to think outside the box and follow their passions. I want to work to change that. I want them to take ownership of their learning process and find what they are passionate about. I want my students to view learning as a lifelong pursuit, not just something that happens at school, and have an opportunity to explore the topics they are curious about.
My Project
These Chromebooks will help me integrate Curiosity Projects into our classroom. These projects will involve helping students discover their own topics of interest and then complete research to learn more about topics in which they are passionately interested. Students will be able to create a presentation to be shared with classmates and families. These projects will be integrated weekly into regular instruction. The Chromebooks will provide student access to essential Internet-based books and resources including articles, videos, photographs, diagrams, e-books, and much more. This will expand the ability of students to access the internet as we have only 2 working classroom computers. Students will be able to spend more time in research as well as in creating presentations to share their new learning! The headphones will allow them the opportunity to listen to videos etc. without disturbing others and the surge protector will allow us to keep things charged and safe.
The addition of the Chromebooks will make it possible for us to really begin using curiosity projects in our classroom.
My hope is that students will learn to become passionately curious and will then learn the skills necessary to research, synthesize, and share their learning. These are skills that will benefit them for their lifetimes as they are the skills of a lifelong learner. I never know when I may have a student who stumbles upon their life's passion and their future career!
