Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
106 years is the age of the building my students come to every day. Located on the westside of Chicago, our school serves pre-K- 8th grade. Our demographic is predominantly Latino with many students learning English as a second language. The entire school qualifies for free breakfast and lunch. Often, students eat more at school than at home. They are motivated and love, love, love to learn. Science in room 307 rocks. Unfortunately, staff turnover is high and resources minimal so we are working extra hard to get exposure to STEAM; Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math. Soon we will be working on adaptation and evolution. In the animal world no creature adapts and evolves like insects. In this project my students will have the opportunity to mold their own insect, research the correct coloration, assess strength and weakness of design and collaborate to create a classroom "Cabinet of Curiosties". AlL this without harming any animals...art and science are awesome. My job as an educator is to prepare these students for high school. Please help my kids connect to the world around them with hands on STEAM projects.
My Project
My students are curiouser and curiouser about everything bug and insect. Living in the middle of Chicago we don't get exposure to anything very exotic. I think it would be great for the kids to build their own Victorian, (No Kill) Cabinet of Curiosities. Students will press the plastic bug models into silicon to make their own molds and paint them true to life, using acrylic paint and irridescent ink. They will use the bugs in resin for reference then put them on display. In this way they will create their own self built, No Kill -Cabinet of Curiosities. This will be amazing.
