My students need materials, such as the the Learniture Active Stools and Snap Circuits, to facilitate Curiosity Centers set up throughout our classroom.
Teaching fifth grade students is a challenge when teachers need to compete with video games and social media. Students are used to instant gratification and many lack perseverance in completing quality work.
The issue to motivate my students is compounded when many of my students come from high poverty homes with limited support and encouragement, due to a variety of circumstances.
I have wonderful students who just need a push and the opportunities to open up new adventures through exploring.
My Project
I am setting up a variety of centers around my classroom that will allow students to work independently or in a small group to explore areas of interest.
Sparking the interest of my students to learn is the goal of my "Curiosity Centers".
The centers will give them a starting place by having them explore, using a variety of activities such as snap circuits or construction materials, and expand to develop circuits and structures of their own.
This will later include research on topics that they would like to further investigate. Using these materials will allow me to teach research and organizational skills; how to write technical text, and produce a quality product.
The flexible seating will allow the students to use the centers without having to rearrange their desks or bring their chairs from across the room. This frequently makes them lose time and disturbs the class.
