Our school is the top-performing, open-access, charter high school in New Orleans. We have an outstanding 3-PEAT state-championship football team, a world-known "Team Bust 'Em Up" marching band and remarkable academic programs. Over eighty percent of our scholars qualify for free or reduced-price lunch and we service a large special education population.
However, our students are far beyond those statistics.
They are also inquisitive learners who would greatly benefit from their teachers learning the best, newest and most innovative cross-curricular material to assist them with their learning needs.
I lead World Geography and World History classes through our high school's credit recovery program. To assist them with fully understanding their lessons' information, I need professional development to improve my knowledge of international cultures, world geography, and world history. I will use this information to assist students with cultural projects, foreign language activities, and world geography research and plans.
An itinerary of international professional development tours has been created with a purpose of impacting students' lessons, giving first-hand experiences, and guiding reliable research of these subjects:
-"American Heritage Gallery" showcases authentic, historical Native artifacts from 7 geographic regions across the United States alongside contemporary examples of cultural traditions that have been handed down through generations.
-"Mexico Folk Art Gallery" displays Mexican cultural activites and food. La Celebración del Día de Muertos's exhibit showcases one of the most important events on the country’s calendar through vibrant displays, arts, and crafts.
-"Gallery of Moroccan Arts & History" exhibit displays traditional and ancient costumes, jewelry, body art, and henna tattoos.
-"Rose & Crown Tea Experience" offers an experts' perspective of the history of tea and its importance in British culture.
-"Reflections of China" is an immersive tour through the sights and sounds of China. Viewers float down historic rivers, see the Great Wall from a birds-eye view, view agile acrobatics of the Peking Opera Company, trek across the Gobi Desert on the ancient Silk Road, and enter the vast historic Forbidden City.
Students will benefit from me having first-hand experiences with these topics because I can share my deeper understanding with them for varied and differentiated learning. I will use pictures and very detailed note-taking system to document information, so it can be shared with students to optimize learning goals and to maximize their learning and understanding.
