Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have a diverse group of passionate students! My students are mostly low-income and come from all over the world. They care deeply about making the world a better place. They are eager and motivated learners. They are artists and activists! They love hands-on activities and getting lost in the world of the stories we read together.

We have a flexible seating classroom.

Flexible seating allows students to feel agency in their learning and work with different people in different learning spaces throughout the day. Students feel like they have control of their learning and the space is their own.

The class has a huge variety of reading levels. Though they are 4th graders, they range in reading levels from Kindergarten to fifth grade. The times they are most engaged are when we read a class. So far this year we have read Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, Because of Winn Dixie, Holes, and Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes. These stories serve as an important touchstone for the class to reflect on teaching points, understand current events, and have abstract discussions.

My Project

My students love when we read novels together! This year has been particularly tough because the books in our library are not at their reading level nor do they reflect the students in the room. The books I selected here will not only be relevant and interesting to them, but will help show them how much representation matters! The students in the classroom are mainly African American and Latin@. We do not have any class sets of books that reflect their identities. They will be so excited to read books that reflect their lives!
