This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our students are an energetic and curious group of children. The surrounding community they come from is distressed. 100% of our children receive free lunch. Despite these challenges, as the school librarian, I see an excitement for reading and the numerous ways students can see success through reading.
We have had a recent influx of Muslim students in our school.
I do not have any books that are culturally responsive for that population of children. I want to have books which represent their culture so that they can see themselves when they are reading.
My Project
These books are for new Muslim students who have enrolled in our school. I want all of my students to have choices in the books they read. Books that reflect who they are and their culture. These titles could be a starting point.
These books would fulfill a need for this population of students.
I choose books which have Muslim characters which will hopefully help fulfill their educational and emotional needs. I will also use the books to educate my other students on this newest population to our school. I believe books are a great jumping off point for teaching acceptance and inclusion.
