Culturally Responsive Literature for Utah's Young Scholars
Help me give my students multicultural texts, social and emotional skills, graphic novels, and day-to-day classroom materials which will facilitate a productive learning environment.
My second- grade students are inquisitive, capable, young scholars. These children have been identified as gifted and talented individuals. As a magnet gifted and talented classroom, we enrich through depth and complexity while building strong foundational skills.
These second graders fly through books faster than I can keep them on the shelves!
Right now, they are loving books from the Dog Man series as well as Percy Jackson, Wings of Fire, and Animorphs. The love these students have for books amazes me everyday.
While some students have an incredible desire to read books all day, everyday, others are more driven by mathematics. Recently, students have been making up their own games to practice their fluency with times tables. I cannot wait to observe all the wonderful changes they will bring to our world!
After remote learning majority of the pandemic, many of my class materials and supplies were never recovered at the end of 2021. This campaign will help replenish some of these supplies for years to come. Additionally, funds will help my class continue building our classroom library so it reflects the interests and needs of my current students.
My Project
This project will help diversify the selection of books my second graders have access to throughout the day. The requested resources also include many of the book series my students love to read. They are always requesting more graphic novels like The Babysitter's Club, Dogman, Investigators, and others.
Multicultural texts, like The Story of Diwali, Pepe and the Parade, and Sharice's Big Voice, Fry Bread, and Too Many Tamales will help my student's feel welcome and celebrated in our classroom.
These texts have characters that are reflective of the demographic in my classroom and will allow scholars to see book characters who come from similar backgrounds as they do. This also gives the opportunity for scholars to learn about other cultures present in our community of learners.
Additionally, some of the included non-fiction texts will allow students to conduct research about ancient civilizations, animal habitats, and historical figures.
My students look forward to engaging in lessons with crisp, new dry erase markers, erasers, paint, paper, and more.
