Culturally Responsive Library

My students need books to develop our classroom library into one that includes themes of diversity, social justice, and equity.

Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My students are unique, excited learners. In our classroom, we begin each day with a fresh start and with a renewed thirst for learning. It is always exciting to see lightbulbs go off as students reach those “aha” moments. These are the moments that remind me why I went into this rewarding profession. My favorite time of day is reading time and as I wrap up teaching and small group instruction, I love sneaking pictures of my students devouring their books. My students’ love for reading allows them to temporarily leave their world for new adventures.

My Project

This DonorsChoose.org project will allow for students who are unfairly marginalized within school systems to see themselves through characters and positive figures in history that look just like them, many of which share their stories. I’m excited to serve a school community that values student voice and family input. Unfortunately, our curriculum materials don’t always reflect the variety of voices that we see in our classrooms.

A classroom library that reflects the students in the room is not a choice, but a necessity.

This alone enhances the curriculum through culturally responsive teaching. Students are more likely to show growth in reading when they can jump inside their books.
