My students are hard working and very energetic. They are creative and love to read! We are a year round school and I loop with my class which means I get to work with them for two years. Our school is Title I with 100% of our students receiving free breakfast, lunch, and snack.
"It's okay to be different" has been a positive motto for our class this year!
We were lucky to be in a culturally rich classroom where we can learn about diversity. Over half of my students are receiving services for special education and ESL. We spend a lot of time building our community and appreciating each other's differences.
My Project
I recently did a project for culturally responsive books that have made for fantastic read aloud. I am now realizing my students also need more culturally responsive books at a level in which they can read independently.
My class is comprised of students from nine different countries.
We spend all year focusing on our class community and honoring our differences. However the leveled books in my class library are outdated and don't have characters or themes that reflect the many cultures within our class community. My students aren't able to see themselves in many of the books we currently have.
This project will greatly enhance our class library by providing books to engage my students. These books will not only be "mirrors" that reflect the students in my class, but they will be "windows" which will give students views of new and different lives unlike their own.
