My students need a culturally responsive teacher in their inner city, diverse, Title I classroom! WE need flags, books and more.
My students are bilingual learners who come from low-income neighborhoods. They are incredibly resilient and are enthusiastic learners! They are sponges for mindfulness practices and are quick to make real-world connections.
They all have experienced living and traveling in different countries and states, leading to minds incredibly receptive to new ideas and concepts.
Their parents often work multiple jobs and from paycheck to paycheck, making extra funds for books a luxury that most cannot afford. We investigate as much as we can on a daily basis, as well as celebrating many important writers and leaders of different cultures. However I also have a duty to stay up to date on the best cultural practices for them to feel valued and included! They deserve this and so much more!
I have one new child who has arrived from El Salvador, does not speak any English, and has WALKED part of his way here!
I need to create a classroom for years to come where the materials are available to this school and classroom teacher to properly support the modern struggles of these children living in economic poverty and personally dealing with immigration issues.
My project is going to ensure that I am able to be the best culturally responsive teacher possible to these children who need this so much in their lives this year and for many years to come. I have found amazing books for us to use as classroom teachers that give us new strategies that will teach us how different uses of play can help children surpass traumas, and to help us focus on which language to choose and use in order to build student confidence and a classroom based on restorative justice. A great majority of our students are continuing harrowing journeys of poverty and migration, and they need our support as they navigate these new lands.
I need to ensure that our classroom is not only a space where they can spend 8 hours every day, but that they feel that it is a safe community that honors and values them. They need leaders who will help them find their strengths amidst dark times. This year I am the one who will help them do that, but these materials will ensure that all teachers of this classroom will have be able to do this in the best way possible for years to come. Communities are always built on the strength of diversity and I am going to be the teacher that helps this one flourish!
