My Students

My students are a diverse group of people, who are very social and like to learn about the world. Most of my class has experienced hardships and trauma that stem from poverty and other life circumstances, however they show continued resilience every day.

My students are developing themselves as life-long learners and starting to think about their futures.

They are becoming serious about their education and getting themselves ready for middle school by developing their stamina and effort, through a growth mindset.

My Project

We are developing love of reading through classroom novel studies with a shared text. Unfortunately many of the books we've read so far are aging, and have mostly white characters. I would like to give them more resources that reflect the communities they live in as well as open doors to other worlds.

I am hoping to support my diverse class's love of reading, by finding novels where the characters look and sound more like them, and where social justice issues are explored.

By doing this, I hope to spark their interest in reading independently and exploring other cultures, as well as issues that affect their world.
