Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach Algebra 1 for an amazing group of English Language Learners at a Title I high school in DISD. All of our students qualify for free or reduced price lunch, and about 60% of our students are low-English proficiency. Unfortunately, this year our school was destroyed by a tornado, making our year unusually difficult. I teach math to students who have recently moved to the U.S. from countries such as Honduras, El Salvador, and Mexico. These students devote an incredible amount of effort to develop their linguistic skills while also mastering the challenging mathematics content required to pass the state exam and graduate from high school.
For many of my students, moving to Dallas is an opportunity to experience an exciting education that they may not have been able to receive otherwise due to situations beyond their control.
Unfortunately, many New Americans are not provided the resources and support to give them the quality of the education that they deserve. Despite these challenges, you will see students who exemplify avid determination, insightfulness, and bright smiles when you walk into my room.
My Project
After moving to a completely new country, our students then lost their school during a tornado earlier this year. These flags will help them to build morale and motivate them during these difficult times to push through and continue with their learning. The diffusers will also help us to build a more relaxing classroom environment, which will allow many of my students who are dealing with toxic stress to pay better attention and focus on their needs. Especially after the move, we have been noticing many students exhibiting signs of the stress of not only moving to a new country but also a new school following the traumatic effects of the tornado. During this time, many students struggle to continue to learn the language while they are missing family members and friends in their home countries. Having a piece of home here in the U.S. will help them to stay motivated to learn and keep spirits high during a difficult time.
