Culturally Responsive Classroom Books

My students need culturally responsive books that reflect the diversity within our class!

My Students

My students are hard working and very energetic. They are creative and love to read! Our school is Title I with 100% of our students receiving free breakfast, lunch, and snack. We are lucky to be in a culturally rich classroom where we can learn about diversity and appreciate each other's differences.

"It's okay to be different" has been a positive motto for our class this year!

In order for each of my students to have a successful year, we spend a lot of time building a strong classroom community. Building positive relationships is something we focus on all year long.

My Project

I have spent a lot of time and money going to garage sales and second hand stores collecting books for my class. However it is difficult to find books on a budget that represent the students I teach.

My class is comprised of students from nine different countries.

We spend all year focusing on our class community and honoring our differences. This is challenging to do when our read aloud books and mentor texts lack diversity. My students aren't able to see themselves in many of the books we currently have.

This project will greatly enhance our class library by providing books to engage my students. These books will not only be "mirrors" that reflect the students in my class, but they will be "windows" which will give students views of new and different lives unlike their own.
