Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach 26 motivated, eager, and ready-to-learn students who I feel need to be exposed to, and have access to, books that better represent their unique backgrounds. A large percentage of students that you will be supporting in this project are from low income households. These students often come from trauma in their backgrounds, or have experiences in their past that alter the way they experience school.
I am working to make these students feel comfortable and safe.
In order to do this, I am attempting to cultivate an environment that values the cultural differences that my students bring into the classroom. The books that you will be supporting with this project, represent the cultural backgrounds of the students in this school, and in my class. These books will be vital resources in helping students bring their cultures and backgrounds to the school environment in a way that will enrich their school experiences.
My Project
In the traditional American school system, students of color are bombarded with literature that represents one specific background and experience. These students come to school and are not used to seeing themselves being represented in the books that they are reading. This project is presented in order to counteract this, and give students reading materials that better represent their families, their traditions, their languages, and their cultural backgrounds.
When students relate to and feel a connection with what they are reading, deeper engagement is fostered and deeper connections are made.
With this being said, the list of books that I compiled here is intended to bring my students' unique cultural backgrounds into the classroom to begin to create a classroom community where students feel that they are being valued, and where students can feel comfortable to explore books and take risks.
