Imagine being 10 years of age, jumping from home to home, shelter to shelter, due to a domestic violence issue your mom is trying to protect you, your siblings, and herself from. Yet, you always come to school with a smile on your face and you give your absolute best effort when present.
Imagine being 10 years of age and living in a shared, cramped garage with your siblings and parents.
Yet, you find space in your current living situation to do your homework.
Imagine being 10 years of age, having dealt with death, already because gun violence is a problem in your neighborhood. Yet, you greet everyone with a warm, "Good morning!", every single day, without missing a beat.
My students are the flames that keep a candle lit. They are resilient, kind, curious, zesty, resourceful and intelligent.
Although they live in San Francisco, a seemingly wealthy and advanced place, most children that attend my school are living in economically deprived places.
They are incredibly deserving of all the city has to offer but are unable to access these resources. Despite this fact, they are happy and excited to learn and grow.
These materials will help students to learn because they will be exposed to literature that is reflective of who they are. The classroom library is lacking books and students don't have a lot to choose from. I want to help cultivate this love of reading, but in order to do that, I need to help them find books with characters they can connect to. I have a population of diverse students that are Black, Latino and Asian. However, the library does not reflect this diversity. They deserve to see themselves in the characters they read about. A book can change a child's life!
