Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are intelligent, curious fifth graders who love learning about the world around them and the ways in which they can contribute as scholars. Located in a low income neighborhood composed of primarily Latino and some African American families, my students come from diverse individual backgrounds that help encourage their resilience, eagerness, and dedication to their learning. My students often have difficulty gaining access to resources outside of the classroom like school supplies, books, etc.
However, no matter their background, each student in my classroom holds a shared sense of pride and investment in their education.
They pride themselves in their passion for knowledge.
My Project
In a society where my students cultural identities are often times erased and ignored within the media, it is important for them to have access to academic resources that represent their cultures in a positive light. My Latino and African American students need access to books that are both engaging and culturally relevant in order to further inspire their excitement to read.
With these new books, my students will finally have access to positive representations of themselves that will strengthen their excitement and dedication to growing their reading levels.
I am positive that each of these books will be read continuously and with increasing joy as each student learns about their own identities, those of their peers, and of those around the world.
