This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
As a teacher in a high poverty/low-income urban area, my students face many challenges in and out of the classroom. Despite these challenges, my students come to school curious and eager to learn.
My students are bright, energetic, and lively!
They love to move, create, and interact with each other. The majority of my students receive free lunch based on their socioeconomic status. Many are being raised by someone other than their biological parents. These obstacles may prevent them from having the "typical" early childhood experiences.
My school is engaging in a new instructional model this year to better support student learning. My students will be together as a grade level all day, with 2 general education teachers, 1 special education teacher and 1 reading intervention teacher providing full day support.
My Project
My students are diverse, but our books aren't. Children who have access to books that have characters like them and that embrace different cultures develop a stronger love of reading than children who don't. I want my students to have book choices that represent their lives and teach them about the cultures of other children in our school.
Now, more than ever, it is important for my students to learn about how wonderful diversity is and how to be kind to one another.
My students also need to see themselves reflected in books. This will help them connect to the characters and develop a love of reading.
These books will not only make read alouds and independent reading time more engaging for my students, but will also teach them to celebrate diversity.
