Culturally Relevant Literature in a Title I School
My students need diverse and culturally relevant literature. This class set of books will allow my students to engage in critical thinking with a story that shows characters and a storyline they can relate to.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students go to school at a large inner-city school in Phoenix, AZ. Our total population is 3,000 students between grades 9 and 12, and 89% of them qualify for free or reduced-price breakfast and lunch. While there are several things that make their lives difficult, my students are by no means victims of their circumstances. They are perseverant and passionate about their futures and don't let obstacles stop them from being successful.
My students need literature that is as diverse as they are so they can see themselves in literature.
They want stories that are engaging to them, and when it comes to teaching a curriculum of critical thinking to them, less diversity in our available literature has led to unique obstacles when it comes to developing empathy and analysis skills.
My Project
Critical thinking and analysis are difficult skills to teach without literature that facilitates empathetic development in students. Students need to see faces like theirs in the literature they read so we can reach both academic and SEL goals we have for the school year.
The Hate U Give is a book that tackles social, political, and emotional issues that are relevant and important to my students.
This is the type of story that will engage students personally, culturally, and critically. Access to education, social alienation, and gun violence are all things that my students are passionate about changing.
Through this unit of study, students will not only engage with the novel but also develop a service-learning initiative that will connect their novel study to their community. Service learning like this has been seen as the future of education, and I can't think of a better way to get students engaged with an issue than to provide them with a character in a novel like them fighting for the same cause.
