Help me give my students an opportunity to build their independent work skills by helping me create culturally relevant reading and writing work stations.
Every child, regardless of race, poverty, family circumstances, or trauma deserve an enriched, culturally responsive, and accessible education. My students are some of our countries strongest tiny humans. Every day these students amaze me and others with their strength, their resilience, their handwork, and their mindset towards reaching their dreams.
At such young ages, these students have experienced unimaginable adversity and hardships from homelessness to families being deported- yet everyday rise above the barriers they've experienced to grow emotionally and academically.
My Project
As a resource room teacher who works with two very different groups of students: students with learning disabilities + students with emotional behavioral disorders, my students learning is constantly being interrupted.
To ensure that all my students are growing and successful, I am creating independent and student self-started reading and writing stations for the many moments I get pulled away during the school day to comfort and help de-escalate their peers.
With these materials, I will be able to establish strong routines that allow flexibility and academic enrichment for some of our most vulnerable students, all while allowing any adult to step in and monitor and guide the activities. The Plastic Document Boxes and plastic storage containers will help me organize their materials. The resources from Lake Shore Learning like tower of sight-words, pop & match beginning phonics games, and sound-it-out blends will help their independent literacy development.
Visual heavy non-fiction texts like the Little people, Big Change series will help engage them in independent non-fiction reading. The mindful dragon books will engage many of my young men on how to understand their emotions in a non-threatening way, and the hot dot pens will help provide feedback to my students if I am unavailable.
