Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My classroom is filled with students who are funny, passionate, and ready to learn! They are always asking questions and finding ways to learn more. Most students are considered low income and come to school with many needs. Since a significant amount of my students are behind grade level, there is a greater need for me to differentiate instruction in order for everyone to be able to access the academics in school. The majority of my students are English Language Learners, which makes having the correct materials and books even more important.
It is my passion to provide my students with a place where they are safe, known, and heard.
I want my students to leave my classroom knowing their opinions matter and they have the ability to have an impact on the world. I love to incorporate my passion for social justice into my teaching in order to empower my students and encourage them to be critical thinkers who will stand up for themselves and others.
My Project
It is so common for childrens' books to be filled with the same types of characters, most of which don't reflect the students who are in my classroom. Students aren't able to relate to a lot of the characters they read about, because their lives are so different in one way or another.
I want my students to be able to see themselves in the books that are in our classroom.
They should be reading books where they can see themselves in the characters and be inspired by the people they are reading about. I hope to be able to provide a classroom library that the students believe represents who is in our classroom.
