Culturally Relevant Art Library:Dreaming Up a Better Tomorrow
My students need nice new books that are culturally relevant in a classroom art library so they can begin to dream up the possibilities that they can create a better tomorrow.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students have deep thoughts that blow my mind every time we look and talk about art. I am so lucky to have the opportunity to help them shine. They are a little rough around the edges, but have hearts of gold buried under the poverty they were born into. In the art room, they learn to build their confidence with drawing and craftsmanship skills, but more importantly they learn how to cooperate with one another while building strong concentration muscles.
My Project
After the art program at my school was abandoned 10 years ago, I was hired to help make this school known for the arts. I have been carving out a peaceful and safe art space that had been used for storage. I have uncovered and fixed the kiln for ceramics, received grant money to build a screen printing shop, and become the stage manager for our professional grade spring musicals. Our students are working hard to close the achievement gap, but struggle due to being raised in generations of poverty.
After reflecting on the needs of our students, my mission is to create a permanent classroom art library, much like I have seen used in more affluent art rooms.
