I am blessed to work in NJ with a group of students who have amazed me with their accomplishments. We have recently implemented Readers and Writers Workshop into our ELA curriculum, and I cannot believe the engagement, stamina, and growth from this year. My students are a testament to that if you set the bar high they will rise to the occasion.
Eager, inspirational, unique.
That is how I can best describe my students. They are receptive to learning to new things, are driven to achieve and are all special in his or her own way with a different story to tell.
My Project
I am excited to offer my students culturally diverse novels to read together in book clubs.
It is very important that my students learn about lives and experiences different from their own in order to develop empathy.
I have chosen contemporary novels because I feel it is very important for my students to understand that the issues the characters are facing are relevant, relatable, important, and occurring right now. By offering these titles I am opening up their eyes to other cultures they might not be exposed to otherwise. On the flip side, I am offering titles that my small diverse population of students can see themselves and feel valued.
