Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Prejudice comes from being in the dark." - Muhammad Ali. My students' Cultural Photojournalism project will bring light to the cultures of our diverse classroom community. By photographing and sharing our families' traditions, we are celebrating our cultural differences and commonalities.
My students are energetic and creative 3rd graders with unique perspectives on the world.
My Integrated Co-Teaching (ICT) classroom is comprised of a diverse group of students, including English Language Learners, Special Education students and recent immigrants from Ivory Coast, Cameroon, Dominican Republic and Bangladesh. They love learning about the world they live in and the lives of the people both near and far from their neighborhood in the Bronx. This year's Social Studies curriculum focuses on cultures and communities around the world. Before we journey to other cultures, students will explore and share traditions from their own culture.
My Project
The Samsung digital cameras will allow my students to document the unique and very personal traditions of their cultures. The 16.0-megapixel camera will capture the details of their families' clothing, food, celebrations and faces. The digital image stabilization will ensure that even in low light apartments, and in the hands of amateur photographers, the pictures will be clear and vibrant. The photographs taken will be used in conjunction with students' poetry to tell a story about their families' culture and traditions. My students will use the pictures to illustrate the images described in their "Where I'm From" poems to create a book about their culture. After compiling these stories students will present their Cultural Photojournals to their classmates and school community to teach and learn about each other's cultures.
We live in a diverse community, rich in culture and tradition.
Diversity can be explored and celebrated or it can create conflict. This project aims to broaden my students' understanding of each other and their traditions in order to help them embrace the multicultural world we live in.
