Wolfson High just became a dedicated magnet that focuses on preparing students for college through Advanced Placement and IB (International Baccalaureate). Advance learning students in grades 10-12 began as a small groups in within the school while students who are in 9th grade are all in this new program. Wolfson is a multi-cultural, "Title One" school, where all of the students receive free breakfast and lunch. Most have no funds to pay for their basic school or art supplies. Nick and Elena will be leading this project as part of their IB Community Service program graduation requirement.
The two students in this project will lean how to research, plan, and create art murals. To do this they will make thumbnail to scale drawing plans using visual art perspective techniques. The thumbnail plans will be drawn larger onto banner material. Other students in the Wolfson IB community will work as a team to complete the paintings that were drawn by Nick and Elena, who will make changes as needed as the murals develop.
In Their Own Words
While researching several artist that use perspective in their work I thought it would be great if we could make a mural for IB students to paint that could be used to showcase IB visual art in the school. So I got with another student who was also working in perspective to see if she would like to check with the IB coordinator/teacher and Ms. beach/art teacher if this could be done.
Being the leaders in this group project will help help each one of use in our future careers and adult life. While helping students in the group painting we are taking on a mentor's role. This will help us inspire other students to create future IB visual art projects. For example, the current 9th grade students who are taking a beginning art class this year will be encouraged to design the banners that will reflect interest in different visual art techniques.
Two International Baccaulaureate visual art students will design a series of banners using one or two point perspective on a movable fabric material. The center mural will show an open view of a classroom with flags from the different cultures that make up the student population. Banners to each side will showing the different types of homes students would live in based upon their native culture. Teamwork will include painting the murals with all students in the IB program participating. Students will learn how to mix paint colors and modify the draw plan as needed.
We want this project to showcase the growing multi-cultural aspects of our IB community.
