Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Most of us have fond memories of food from our childhood. Whether it was our mom's homemade lasagna or a memorable chocolate birthday cake, food has a way of transporting us back to the past."-Homaro Cantu
Our students are an amazing bunch of 9th graders who come from all over Brooklyn and New York City to attend our public school.
They are innovators and creative thinkers who often don't have the breadth of experiences other school districts may offer them. Our school is full of dedicated and passionate teachers who work hard to bring project-based learning and authentic experiences to life for our students.
My Project
We have two weeks to immerse students in an authentic experience, which we call "intensives". In our cultural awareness intensive, students will explore the ethnography of New York city through the lens of food. Our students will explore different cultures like Italian, Chinese, Middle Eastern, and Ethiopian through researching foods that are indigenous to those cultures. We will travel to various parts of NYC that encompass those cultures.
Students will research through taste testing and, interviewing key members like chefs, restaurant owners, servers, etc... After students gather all of the information needed about the four cultures, students will create a cultural diffusion dish that combines their understanding of the new cultures they have researched. They also will create a visual presentation demonstrating their knowledge of different cultural entities that shape NYC.
Funding to pay for the expense of food is the most essential part of our project.
Many of our students have never explored what NYC has to offer due to their own socioeconomic status. This experience will give students the opportunity to explore different cultures that help shape our world through common language like food. This project exposes the larger world to our students, and it will give them a learning experience that just can't be taught in a classroom.
