I am a French Teacher at Schiller School in Chicago, IL. The school is located in Cabrini Green. Ninety-nine percent of the students qualify for free or reduced lunch. 100% of our African American population comes from the White Tower projects in Cabrini Green.
I teach five different levels of French, fourth grade through eighth grade. My eighth graders have been taking French since fourth grade and are ready to move on to level two next year upon entering high school; this is wonderful because they have been given a head start with foreign language which is vital for admission into any college or university.
My goal as a foreign language teacher has been to make the content come alive for my students. I do not believe that teaching a foreign language consists of just grammar and vocabulary, there is a life behind language. Since I can't fund a trip to France or Africa it is my job to bring the World to my classroom. It is my job to help the students understand and relate to other cultures.
Keeping my students motivated and interested in the French language and culture is a daily challenge. I have already spent hundreds of dollars on materials for my classroom and am at a point where I cannot spend any more. I am seeking the materials to support an interactive unit on French speaking Africa. I am also seeking the materials to host cultural events such as a Mardi Gras party, cultural celebrations, and cooking French and African meals.
All of the items requested are reusable and therefore can be used year after year.
I have a vision for this school year and it includes as many interactive educational activities as possible. I know if we receive the materials requested it will provide my students with endless hours of educational fun and discovery.
