This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are enthusiastic, eager to help others and excited to learn. Our middle school is located in the middle of South Carolina and qualifies for one hundred percent free breakfast and lunch.
Many of my students come from low income/high poverty households and do not have the funds to purchase necessary school supplies for project based learning.
My middle school students are eager to learn, eager to create and eager to make a difference in their community. They love using technology to improve their knowledge and enhance their creativity. I would like to help these students reach their full potential by providing them with the necessary tools.
My Project
Our school is on track to become a STEAM school. By designing and producing their own quilts students will be using and improving their skills in Technology, Engineering, Art and Math.
These materials (sewing machines, rotary cutters, rulers, and healing mats) will allow my students to create a unique, one of a kind quilt while incorporating real life Technological, Engineering, Artistic and Mathematical skills.
While creating their quilts, students will use the same design process that engineers use. The rotary cutters, and mats will allow students to put their math skills to use as they measure and cut fabric to exact lengths to create a visually appealing masterpiece. Learning to use the sewing machine will enhance my students’ technological talents as well as expand their real life skills.
Students will improve their artistic skills by using a variety of contrasting and complementing colors of fabric to create their one of a kind masterpiece. Students will be required to incorporate real life math skills to calculate needed yardage, and to measure and cut fabric. Students will make a difference by presenting their beautiful creations to the local homeless shelter. Help my students become the TEAM in STEAM and make a difference in our community!
