Help me give my students each a copy of Scholastic Storyworks Magazine so they can be exposed to different genres of text at a high interest level, and build a love of reading.
We are a team of four teachers in a small, rural town at a school with a large percentage of students who receive free or reduced lunch.
4th graders are at an amazing age where they are more mature, but still excited about learning and school and we can't wait to help foster this love of learning and reading in our students.
We are so excited for this year, and can't wait to see how much our students learn and grow!
My Project
Students will use Scholastic StoryWorks magazine during reading time. Each month the magazine includes a variety of texts including: nonfiction articles, stories, poems, plays, and more. The magazines will help us introduce students to different genres in a fun, nonthreatening way. We teach my students to think critically about what they have read and ask questions. These magazines are the perfect way to teach students how to think about their reading because of the shorter articles and engaging format. We will use the articles as a whole class, in small groups, and independently for enrichment. In addition to comprehension skills, we will use the magazines to practice reading fluently and expand students' vocabulary. We will also use the magazines to teach writing, both in providing a mentor text for strong writing and by having students respond in writing to what they have read. With Scholastic StoryWorks the possibilities are endless!
These magazines will help us teach the 4th grade ELA standards for Montana in a fun, exciting way.
More importantly, these magazines will make reading a positive and fun experience for my students. Getting students to like reading is half the battle. Students who have read Storyworks in past years frequently come back to tell how much they love reading. We want that for all our students. Our goal is to create life long readers, and StoryWorks can help us do that.
