Students in my classroom are Wildcats, hoping to become more fierce each and every day in this ever-changing world. Our neighborhood school educates over 700 students per year, most of them living in high poverty, single-family homes. The children are building stamina to become lifelong readers.
My current fourth graders have created a strong bond through books and are learn about their own identities and their classmates identities to create a more respectful, compassionate and empathetic classroom setting.
During the year we also spend a great deal of time getting to know some of the social issues our world is currently facing. It's amazing to watch them grow not only as fourth graders but as citizens of this beautiful place we call home!
The students come from a variety of backgrounds and as Rudine Sims Bishop, Professor Emerita of Education at The Ohio State University said, "children need literature that serves as a window into lives and experiences different from their own and literature that serves as a mirror reflecting themselves and their cultural values, attitudes, and behaviors." It is my hope to provide them with reading that provides mirrors to help them see themselves.
My Project
My goal is to help empower teachers to cultivate avid readers and writers.
By increasing my knowledge about coaching teachers to be mindful of language and teaching in the classroom, I will be armed with the tools I need to help teachers succeed.
Professional learning is so important.
Many of the items I'm requesting are professional development books for myself that will build my own pedagogy and allow me to in turn focus on teacher growth. I look forward to growing myself professionally so that I can project that knowledge onto others.
