Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I advise an award-winning robotics program at a middle school. My husband once described the robotics program like this: “It’s exactly like The Karate Kid, only with robots instead of karate.” He was being facetious, but when I think about it, he may have been onto something.
Like the protagonist in the movie, my students are underdogs.
They live in the community of City Heights, a diverse, high-poverty, and crime-ridden area. All of my students qualify for the free/reduced-price lunch program. They have to contend with many barriers and obstacles including unequal access to resources. Moreover, they all share a thirst for learning about technology, specifically engineering and robotics.
My Project
In addition to engineering and robotics, the students also make in my class. As part of making, they create prototypes of their solutions to problems. Using the Cricut maker, the students can cut out cardboard and other materials to help them build their models.
The Cricut machine will allow the students to brand their items with their designs in vinyl and/or heat transfer vinyl to design their t-shirts for the different competitions.
The bright pad is a lightboard where the students can place their more intricate designs and the tool helps make weeding the material significantly easier.
The students will also use the Cricut Maker to make letter cut-outs to help them decorate their presentation boards for their research project for the FLL (First Lego League) competition. With the machine at their disposal, their boards will look spiffy and professional.
