I love my school, the amazing heroes I work with, and our wonderful young scholars. Our middle school is a Title I school. Funding for classroom materials is limited and can be very scarce. My students come to my classroom without book-bags, pencils, or paper. The majority of students receive free breakfast and lunch. My students simply do not have access to the school materials they need on a daily basis for their everyday classes. My students become my family – they become my babies…long after they have left my classroom. For the last three years, my husband and I have been able to put our monies into making sure my students have all they need to continue to work incredibly hard and stay motivated throughout the year by feeling cared about. In February 2018, after the birth of our twins, I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. This has put a great financial strain on my family. I am a planner and want to make sure my new 2018-2019 scholars have everything they need for the year in terms of classroom supplies. Now, my husband and I need help. We need YOUR help.
My Project
Each year, I tell my new students that when they enter my classroom, they are becoming a part of a new family. In order for my students to feel this sense of family and comfort, I am determined to create a classroom climate that embraces, fosters, and supports the following: coziness, creativity, and self-discovery.
Throughout the school year, we all grow, we develop new skills, we expose our insecurities, we strengthen ourselves - and we do it TOGETHER.
Here is where YOU come in...I need help creating what I see as an ideal classroom climate. Here are some of the top items I would love to be able to provide for my students: to help cultivate a sense of coziness, I am asking for window shades with command hooks, glade plug ins, and paper flowers for brightness in classroom. Every year, I have a class store that is full of prizes for students who follow our behavior hierarchy (personal responsibility, respect, integrity, determination, excellence - PRIDE). Usually, the incentives I provide involve candy and chips. I would like to move away from sugary goodness and in the direction of tangible incentives such as little book bags and fun bracelets. Creativity and engagement are incredibly crucial in any 6th grade classroom - mini white boards and easy access pen and pencil holders will aide students in becoming more involved in classroom activities. Finally, the BIGGEST "ask" in the project is to be able to supply my students in an in-class printer. We do so much work on technology and so many of my students have no way to actually produce a paper copy of their work due to the lack of printers at home. A classroom printer would give me the opportunity to provide students with instant copies of their work.
