In a Dual Language Immersion setting, comprehensible and authentic materials are the key to successfully acquiring a second language. My students are gaining literacy growth through classroom instruction that is differentiated and supports varied learning styles. As they grow in their language learning journey, they need to be challenged with meaningful literary resources that promote their intellect. These students are transitioning to a brand new grade level, 3rd grade, and they need appropriate literature in their classroom library.
These 26 dual language learners love reading books in Spanish, challenging themselves to build up new vocabulary and language skills through a good book.
My Project
These dual language readers have developed milestones in their reading development of Spanish. They need to keep growing their language skills as well as their vocabulary repertoire. These authentic Spanish books will continue to enhance the print-rich classroom that I strive to create for them. All of these books have been chosen with my students in mind-I have watched them the past few weeks of school read titles just like these in their first language, and I have also asked them what type of books they would enjoy reading. Students will be able to choose books, which will help them continue to enjoy independent reading time.
With these new books, my students will be able to choose from a variety of books that will allow them to read independently at their own grade level.
The best way to increase reading ability is to read more, and these books will continue to help my students grow stronger in reading. My students already have shown an astonishing interest in independent reading, and this project will only help enrich their experiences with the Spanish printed word.
Getting authentic books in Spanish is not easy, and they are more expensive. This project will help developing the foundation of an enjoyable classroom library.
