I am asking for help with funding for a field trip for the 5th graders in my elementary school. This field trip is a great way to end their time in elementary school and celebrate all of the hard work they have done this year!
My classroom is full of culturally and linguistically diverse learners who thirst for new and exciting learning opportunities outside of their classroom and neighborhood!
They are from one of the most economically depressed neighborhoods in my state. All of my students receive free breakfast and lunch. This does not define them, but this is the reason why I am asking for help to defray the burden that the cost of this field trip might place on some of the families. I do not want money to be the reason why some students choose not to attend this unique and exciting experiential learning opportunity!
Here is a snapshot of my students. Twenty out of my twenty-eight students speak another language in addition to English! Of those twenty students, 8 speak Spanish and English, 10 speak Cape Verdean Creole and English, 2 speak Portuguese and English.
My Project
The educational objective of the trip is to enrich students' conceptual understanding of the Earth's place in the Universe, the components of the solar system and how they interact, and engineering and design in different contexts through experiential learning.
The students will see a planetarium show "Our Place in Space" and participate in a workshop "Toys in Space" offered by the Museum.
"Our Place in Space" is a the planetarium show that will take the students on an unforgettable tour through our cosmic neighborhood as they explore the craters of Mercury, stormy Neptune and discover why Earth is so unique. The adventure does not end there as they will also explore nebulae and star clusters of the Milky Way Galaxy. During the "Toys in Space" Workshop" the students will experiment with a range of toys and hypothesize about how they would work in space, then put their guesses to the test by seeing the same toys being used in space! The students will also have time to explore the natural history museum after the show and workshop and do a scavenger hunt!
