My students need books to support our Culinary Arts program, and also tie it to STEM such as: Culinary Reactions: The Everyday Chemistry of Food, The Science of Cooking, Cooking for Geeks, and other titles.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are scholars, athletes, musicians, chess players, manga and anime fanatics, cheerleaders, artists, runners, and volunteers. They participate in all kinds of clubs and activities. They are funny, quirky, and curious. Some are learning English. Many are looking forward to college and careers. They take great pride in our school.
I try to create a welcoming environment for them filled with materials/resources that meet the needs of as many students as possible.
As a high school librarian I see avid readers, non-readers, and every type of reader in between. Wherever my students begin, my goal is to help them grow and expand as readers, writers, thinkers, and dreamers.
My school is a Title I school with students qualifying for free meals. Many of my students do not have a quiet, comfortable place to read at home. While most of my students can decode words on a page, many have not developed a love of or passion for reading. They have not found that special book, that "home run" book that changes the course of their reading lives.
My students like the coffee house vibe we are trying to create in our library; an atmosphere of joy and inquiry prevails.
My Project
Our school has so many great programs, and our library needs to support them all! Students love Culinary Arts, and there are so many connections to be made to STEM as well as arts and cultures. There just aren't enough funds to fill all the gaps in our library collection.
These books will broaden the knowledge, enhance the skills, and support the learning of our students as they develop their abilities in Culinary Arts and Chemistry; they are a lot of fun, too!
Voluminous reading, in many genres and subjects is the key to deep and life-long learning. As C.S. Lewis said, “Eating and reading are two pleasures that combine admirably.” I would add Science to that equation! Our students will learn a lot from these additions to our school library.
