Culinary Art For Kids in Los Angeles

My students need cooking pots, pans, and oven mitts to handle them. We would also like a candy making and cake decorating set.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We believe that what we learn is not just for ourselves but to help others and make a better world! Our school needs your help to continue our cooking club to serve our community. We need some basic supplies to learn and prepare favorite foods for the people in our lives and in our community.

My students go to a charter school in the heart of downtown.

Our school opened about 9 years ago. This is my 7th year teaching here. Most of the students qualify and get free and reduced lunches. Our classes take place in a building that used to be a mortuary, so the classrooms are really small. But we make use of what we have. For example, instead of parking our cars in the parking lot, we use it as a playground for the kids. We don't have a school library. Many of the students go to school at 7 am in the morning and stay until 6 pm at night. That's why the after school program is really important for them. The teachers offer clubs for the students to have experiences outside of class. I started to offer cooking classes in the summer. The students really enjoyed cooking and preparing food together.

My Project

I would like to spend time with the kids to cook together and serve food to the people around us. Our school adheres to five values; one of them is that we believe that what we learned is not just for ourselves, but to help others and make a better world. Although our school donates cans and toys to the people in need on special occasions, like Thanksgiving and Christmas, I would like the students to serve more often to others. In the process of helping others, my students will practice many skills in reading, measuring, calculating, and working together. They will plan meals and recipes to what interests them. Throughout the year, they will document their work through photographs and writing so that they could look back and see what they have accomplished. I have requested basic materials such as pots and pans to make candies, cookies, and other items. I have also requested nutrition information, so that we could learn to make healthy snacks for the people in our lives.

The students always love to have hands-on practice in school.

Cooking is one of those rare opportunities which allow for that to happen. They combine many skills together in order for cooking to take place. To access the recipes, they must read. To measure the ingredients, they utilize their math and measuring skills. Cooking also allows them to work together as a team. Your contribution will give kids a chance to put their learning in real life applications.
