Did you love stuffed animals as a child? Did you ever enjoy cuddling with your favorite stuffed animal and reading a favorite book? With my project, I want each of the 12 boys and 7 girls in my class to experience the excitement of reading to a stuffed animal each night. As an educator, my job is to ensure a love of reading in each of the 19 (seven to nine year old) children in my class. My vision is to do that, not only in the classroom, but with each of the children snuggling up at night and reading with a cuddly Beanie Baby, since nightly reading is part of our weekly homework. This project gives all of my students, who come from all cultures, various incomes and from different areas of our suburban town, the opportunity to thrive and excel in reading. I know this project will excite every child in my class!
My Project
With my Cuddle Up and Read project I want to inspire my students to become lifelong readers. I want them to enjoy reading because it is fun, not because someone is asking them to do it. With this project each child in my class will adopt a Beanie Baby for a week and read to it each night. At the end of the week they will be able to adopt a different Beanie Baby for the following week.
Each child will need to fill out an “adoption card” by filling in the Beanie Baby’s name and the student’s name on the adoption card.
On the card each child will also sign a pledge to read each night to the Beanie Baby. With this project, I hope that my students will become more fluent readers with better comprehension, but also find an author or a series that turns them on to the love of reading. I am hoping each child will not be reading each night because it is their homework but because they can’t wait to fall into a good book.
