Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are some of the most hardworking students at our school. All of my students are special education students.
They are students with Autism, Learning Disabilities, ADHD, Language Disabilities or Other Health Impairments.
These disabilities make learning more difficult for them. In addition, over 65% of my students are English Language Learners, many of these students are still learning how to speak English. Our school has the highest Hispanic population in the state. Our school also qualifies as a Title I School: over 85% of our students live in poverty and receive free/reduced-priced lunch. Despite all of these obstacles, these students are eager to come to school each day. They always try their best and never give up when they face hardships. The students at this school are really special, and their enthusiasm and willingness to learn make teaching them such a joy.
My Project
Our school recently received Botley and Dash robots to use in the after-school program. We currently do not have enough robots for everyone to participate. With the addition of Sphero and Cubelet robots, more students will get the opportunity to learn how to code.
STEM education provides students with lifelong learning skills.
It allow them to work on their problem solving skills, social skills, and technology skills. They must work in a group to complete many of the coding problems with the robots. This will help them learn how to take turns and work with others. Technology and problem-solving skills are life long skills they will need to succeed. Cubelet robots come without instructions. This allows the students to create and explore on their own. They must use their team work and problem solving skills to code these robots. So many job possibilites will open up for them if they work on these skills.
