My students are an inspiration! My special education classroom is made up of fun-loving and active 3rd through 5th graders, all of whom have a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder, or a related disability. They face many challenges, both academically and socially, but the happiness and positive attitude they maintain motivate me to do all that is in my power to help them succeed.
My students persevere, even though they need to put in extra time and effort to learn the academic, social, and life skills taught in elementary school.
The school I work at is becoming a magnet school with an emphasis on STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and music) subjects. This change brings new opportunities for creative and hands-on learning, which will be especially motivating for my students. I am inspired and excited to teach! Every year is a new adventure!
My special education classroom will be implementing flexible seating this year! This exciting change not only provides them with comfortable seating options, but also provides them with sensory input and increases blood flow which stimulates the brain, helping them learn.
Flexible seating requires a new way of storing and organizing!
With the removal of most of our traditional desks and chairs, there is no longer the under-the-desk-storage for the students' books, binders, and folders. This Storage Cubby Locker will provide each of my students with a space of their own to stay organized and store the books and materials they need in school.
