My Students
My students are at-risk. This means they are at risk of not graduating. Some of my students are pregnant, teen parents, on probation, from group homes, behind in credits, second language learners, struggling with drug addiction, or simply just have not made a connection with their traditional high school. I work in a Model Continuation Title I high school. The student-to-teacher ratio is 20:1. Our students have the opportunity to make up their credits by attending our local community college, completing additional coursework at our school, enrolling in ROP, and taking additional classes online. Our entire school population receives free lunch.
The majority of our students were placed here involuntarily.
Most of our students do not have computers at home, nor do they have internet access. Our students benefit from smaller class sizes. We check-in and evaluate each student's progress every three weeks. My entire staff loves our student population.
My Project
Our staff promotes higher level education to our high school students. We have some students that attend our local community college after their high school day. We offer the English and Math placement exams for our seniors at our high school. The staff wears college t-shirts two Fridays per month to continue the conversation about going to college and all of the opportunities that are available.
We want to surprise students by raffling off California State University at Channel Islands T-Shirts.
The students have been very receptive to our conversations about college. Many of our students have expressed that they wish that they had college t-shirts. This is the first of a few college t-shirt grants that I will be writing. My staff and I believe in the future of our students and making their dreams a reality.
For many of our students, they will be the first in their family to attend a college or a university. CSUCI, Cal State University @ Channel islands, offers degrees in Liberal Studies, Nursing, Physics, Computer Science, Engineering and so much more. CSUCI is in our county and is a 20 minute drive from Ventura. Our dream is to have our high school graduates seize the opportunities available at CSUCI.
