This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

“It’s all Greek to me!” - Shakespeare My students love learning about the Greeks: the gods, the myths, and the monsters! Reading Rick Riordan’s the Sea of Monsters would be fantastic because it appeals to diverse readers and it encourages them to make connections to literature.

I have a fabulous class of thirty-seven students whose abilities range from typical to gifted and from severe learning disabilities to autism.

Over 95% of my students receive free lunches and come from low-income homes. Our school is located in southern California and is a Title-1 school. Despite these challenges, my students come to class everyday excited to learn more about mythology and stories from the past. By reading Sea of Monsters I hope to guide them through a story they love and help them explore other novels by the same author. Riordan’s book, and other books in this series, can help create life-long readers amongst these students which will help them do better in middle school, through high school, and beyond.

My Project

Sea of Monsters, by Rick Riordan, is the 2nd book in the Lightning Thief series, which follows Percy Jackson, a 6th grader who learns that he is the son of a Greek god. (All of the 6th graders at my school read the first book in their English class.) In Sea of Monsters Percy undertakes an odyssey to rescue his best friend, Grover, from an evil Cyclops. As Percy sets sail, he encounters skeleton pirates, battles the Hydra (a nine-headed snake monster), escapes from the Sirens (monster birds who lure sailors to their deaths), and tries to recover the Golden Fleece in order to save the day back home. Students love reading about Percy and his adventures. They relate to his struggles in school, his concern for his best friend, and his desire to be a good son to his single mother. In addition, they love learning about the myths that Riordan incorporates into his story. No matter their ability level, students love reading Sea of Monsters and I want that for my students.

Getting students to connect to literature can be a challenge, however most love learning about ancient Greece and Greek mythology.

Selecting a novel which captures their imagination and hooks them into a series is a huge success! The novel will also allow us to study other Greek myths including Hercules’s Twelve Labors and the Trojan War. As they read, my students will seek to learn more about these topics outside of the classroom, moving their experience beyond the pages of the novel.
